Bulls lose Supreme Court Appeal

Bulls lose Supreme Court Appeal

The UK Supreme Court dismissed an appeal from Peter and Hazelmary Bull, a Christian couple who operated a Bed & Breakfast Hotel policy that only allowed heterosexual married couples to share a double bed. A gay couple, Martyn Hall and Stephen Preddy challenged the practice and successfully sued them. The Court ordered the Bulls to pay £3,600 in damages for injured feelings.

Peter and Hazelmary appealed the decision to the Supreme Court on grounds of 'reasonable accommodation'. They did not intend to be hostile to anyone but merely exercised their right of conscience as Christians. The appeal was still lost.

The Christian Institute that funded the Bulls' Case observes that "sadly the Supreme Court allowed sexual orientation to trump religious freedom and side-stepped an opportunity to balance competing rights."(Winter 2013, Christian Institute Newsletter)

Do you agree or disagree with the Christian Institute's observation?

Do you think that the provision of 'reasonable accommodation' relating to religious beliefs and their manifestations have been adequately considered in the UK and European Courts in recent cases?

Feel free to leave your comment.
