Government Launches Consultation on Home Education – Call for Evidence and revised DfE Guidance

The Department for Education (DfE) is calling for evidence to help consider whether the current arrangements for oversight of elective home education are adequate to fulfil the government’s aspiration that all children in England should receive a good education. It also seeks views on the proposed updating of departmental guidance on current arrangements for elective home education.

Government appoints campaigner Sara Khan to lead anti-extremism drive
A prominent campaigner has been appointed by the Government to lead a fresh drive to root out and tackle extremism in the UK. Sara Khan will head up the newly-created Commission for Countering Extremism, the Home Office announced.
Government Appoints New Secretary of State for Education

Damian Hinds MP has been named as the new Secretary of State for Education after Justine Greening resigns. This came as a result of Prime Minister Theresa May's new year's reshuffle on 8th January 2018.

Whilst we understand this might be a busy period where some are preocupied with festivities, we encourage everyone to respond to this call for evidence as soon as possible.

We first and foremost solicit everyone to consider this matter prayerfully. This is an opportunity for Christians to not only make their voices heard, but also as an opportunity to witness for the God we serve.

Christ told us to be as “wise as serpents, and harmless as doves” (Matt. 10:16). In a world where, as Seventh Day Adventist Christians, we might increasingly feel besieged by rulings that seem to erode our religious freedoms, we might find it very difficult to exercise that balance of being serpent-like doves, so to speak.

The Annual Report of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills 2016/17

Amanda Spielman, the group’s head, said spreading “shared values” would be one of Ofsted’s main priorities for the coming year.

“Current legislation is inadequate to tackle unregistered schools. It limits our powers and allows institutions to exploit loopholes about definitions of education,” the report says.

A  confirmation to radically change the Gender Recognition Act - 2004

The Government announced on 23 July 2017 its intention to revolutionise the Gender Recognition Act.  This Act of Parliament allowed transgender people to change their legal gender status.  It came into effect on 4 April 2005.  However, Justine Greening has announced proposals to 'streamline and de-medicalise' the process to change gender.  The news has received mixed responses for and against such a legislative change.  A consultation on the Gender Recognition Act is earmarked for publication in autumn.

The Members of Parliament debated the Second Reading of the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill in the Commons.

The Bill passed the Second Reading with 326 to 290 (with 36 majority vote for the Government).  It will now move to the Committee Stage where it will receive line by line scrutiny.
