The European Commission of Human Rights' Jurisprudence And Decision in Konttinen Case

Following the European Court of Human Rights' Judgement in the case of Eweida and Others v the United Kingdom1, I feel it is time for the Court to seriously consider on a case by case basis, the provision of reasonable accommodation in the work place, especially when conflicts arise between scheduling and religious observance of the Sabbath. This pertains to the European Commission of Human Rights' ruling, following its alleged legal reasoning in 1996, in the Konttinen v Finland case.

UK Government Acknowledges House of Lord's Amendment to "Insult Law"

The Adventrlp readers are being informed that the Home Secretary, Theresa May, on 14th January 2013 signalled that the Government would accept to remove the word "insulting" from Section 5 of the Public Order Act, 1986. Mrs May told the MPs that the House of Lord's amendment put forward by Lord Dear, a former Chief Constable and HM Inspector of Constabulary would not be challenged. She said,

"I respect the review taken by their Lordships. They had concerns which I know are shared by some in this House that Section 5 encroaches upon freedom of expression." [1]

The Peers had overwhelmingly voted 150 to 54 in favour of the change. It is the hope of the campaigners that the law which had been perceived as an infringement, will now enhance the public's freedom of speech, expression and religious liberty.

The European Sunday Alliance have identified three key areas as reasons to have legislation for a 'Work Free Sunday': 1. health & safety at work  2. time for family and 3. better social cohesion.

The following aricle recognizes all of these points to be of great value to individuals and society at large, however this does not change the fact that to legislate Sunday as an official day of rest would still remain unlawful.  Click the following link to read the full article.
