The Government announced on 23 July 2017 its intention to revolutionise the Gender Recognition Act. This Act of Parliament allowed transgender people to change their legal gender status. It came into effect on 4 April 2005. However, Justine Greening has announced proposals to 'streamline and de-medicalise' the process to change gender. The news has received mixed responses for and against such a legislative change. A consultation on the Gender Recognition Act is earmarked for publication in autumn.
