Independent School Standards Update

Independent School Standards Update

Following the lobbying by the Christian Institute, our Adventreligio-Legal perspectives, other groups and individuals through letters and articles, I am delighted that the Department for Education has provided clarification on the following;

 a. Standard 5(b)

8. "It is not necessary for schools or individuals to 'promote' teachings, beliefs or opinions that conflict with their own, but nor is it acceptable for schools to promote discrimination against people or groups on the basis of their belief, opinion or background."

b. Standard 5(b)(vi)

18 "....... The standard does not mean, for example that schools must promote alternative lifestyles or same sex marriage. Rather, it requires respect for other people, even if they choose to follow a lifestyle that one would not choose to follow oneself."

I believe this is a positive development and a step in the right direction by the Department for Education. However, there is still need for further clarification about how the above changes will be translated in practice.

I concur with your conclusions, and hope that an effective process will be put in place to translate these changes into practice. I do believe that this is a positive step in the right direction.
