Consultation on ‘Opt-out’ Consent for Organ and Tissue Donation
Government Consultation on 'Presumed Consent' Organ Donation
This consultation has now closed
The Government is consulting the public on introducing an 'opt out' approach to organ donation in England. At death, a person would be treated as an organ donor unless they had specified otherwise.
"a person will be considered to have consented to organ and tissue donation after death unless they opt out"
This is a reversal of the current 'opt in' practice where consent is obtained first from the individual. At the moment, consent is obtained through the person signing the Organ Donor Register or from the family after death.
